This memorial will be an important step in the healing process as we remember those who were lost and grieve with those who were affected by this tragedy in the heart of our community.
Local Artists Selected for 8-4 Memorial in
Oregon District
The 8-4 Memorial Committee is pleased to announce the selection of the team that will create a memorial in the Oregon District in honor of the tragic events that occurred on August 4, 2019.
The team selected includes the following artists:
Terry Welker, FAIA: architect/sculptor, team leader
Sierra Leone: poet, educator, community builder
Jes McMillan: artist, community builder, The Mosaic Institute
James Pate: artist, designer, community builder

Please click here for more information on the team, memorial renderings, and details on the vision for the memorial, which the team has named The Seed of Life. The team has a budget of $200,000 for the completion of the memorial, which is expected to be complete by August 4, 2024.
If you would like to donate to the Memorial Fund for the Oregon District at The Dayton Foundation, click here. Funds will be used for ongoing maintenance and other related expenses.
8/4 Memorial Public Input
The 8/4 Memorial Steering Committee spent nearly a year collecting input on the 8/4 Memorial. The committee offered several opportunities for the community to share feedback, including a Community Resiliency Forum, survey to victims, survivors and first responders, and a survey to the general public. Small discussion groups were also planned for those who wanted to share more. Results and summaries from these efforts are listed below.
